Filters vs. Strainers in Hydraulic Systems

Filters vs. Strainers in Hydraulic Systems

2025-06-18

Filters and strainers both serve to remove contaminants from hydraulic fluid, but they operate at different levels of precision and purpose:

Strainers are designed to intercept larger particles—those visible to the naked eye, such as grains of sand or metal fragments. They work with minimal resistance to fluid flow, resulting in a small pressure drop. For this reason, strainers are commonly installed on pump suction lines to prevent large debris from entering the pump.

Filters, in contrast, trap much finer particles—down to sizes smaller than a human red blood cell. These microscopic contaminants are invisible without magnification. Because filters have finer media, they impose greater resistance to flow, which leads to higher pressure drops. They also require more frequent replacement or maintenance as they clog more quickly
